Cancel Notion Without Losing Your Pages

Export first, then downgrade. Downgrading a paid Notion plan to Free deletes nothing. Your pages stay, and the Free limits apply from the end of your billing period. Go to Settings, then Billing, then Change plan, and pick Free. Do not delete the workspace to stop paying. Notion says deleting a workspace does not cancel a subscription. Before you change anything, export the whole workspace twice, once as Markdown & CSV and once as HTML, so you have a portable copy and a fuller one.

Export everything first

Go to Settings, pick General under Workspace, then Export all workspace content. This works on desktop or web, and it is available on every plan, Free included. Run it twice. Markdown & CSV gives you plain files you can open anywhere. HTML keeps more, including page and block comments, and it is the format Obsidian's Importer asks for. Each export arrives as an emailed link that expires after 7 days and can take up to 30 hours to process. The export only holds pages you can access, so ask other members to export their private pages. The Markdown files come with 32-character IDs in every name, which the Notion to Markdown tool's Clean export (.zip) mode strips while it fixes the links.

What happens when you downgrade to Free

Notion keeps your content when you downgrade. Nothing is deleted. As of September 2026, the Free plan works like this. A workspace with one member has unlimited blocks. With two or more members, the cap is 1,000 blocks, and once you hit it there is a three-day grace period, after which you must upgrade to keep creating content. Deleting blocks or emptying the trash does not lower the count. File uploads are capped at 5 MB each. Page history goes back 7 days. You can have up to 10 guests. Automations become view-only, Custom Agents are switched off but not deleted, and SAML, SCIM, and audit logs are turned off. Existing permissions stay, but you can't add new ones.

Timing, refunds, and prices

The downgrade takes effect at the end of your current billing period, and you keep paid features until then. Notion gives no credit for downgrading. A full refund is available within 3 days of signing up on monthly billing, or within 30 days on annual billing. Paid plans renew automatically until you cancel. As of September 2026, Plus costs $10 per member per month billed annually or $12 billed monthly. Business costs $20 per member per month billed annually or $24 billed monthly, with Notion AI included. Enterprise shows custom pricing.

Deleting a workspace or your account

Deleting a workspace is permanent, and it does not cancel your subscription, so downgrade first. The path is Settings, then General, then Danger zone, then Delete entire workspace. Deleting your account is a separate step under Settings and your name, then Delete my account. It removes private workspaces where you are the only member and shared workspaces where you are the only admin. Notion says it keeps database backups and can restore a snapshot of your content from the past 30 days if you contact support after deleting your account.

How do you do it step by step?

1Export the whole workspace as Markdown & CSV, then again as HTML, from Settings, then General, then Export all workspace content.
