Why is the 1280x720 version missing for some videos?

YouTube only creates the maxresdefault file when the uploaded video was 720p or larger. Older and low-resolution uploads stop at 480x360. The tool tests each size and hides the ones that do not exist.

Does the link I paste go to your server?

No. The page reads the video ID in your browser and asks YouTube's image servers for the file directly. There is nothing on our side to log.
